Manchester City stars were still proudly wearing their Carabao Cup medals as they touched down at Manchester Airport just before midnight on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola‘s side narrowly edged out Chelsea in a penalty shootout to kick-start their bid to end the season with a quadruple.

Kevin De Bruyne, Vincent Kompany and Kyle Walker were all pictured arriving back with medals around their necks as Pep Guardiola’s players continue to dine out on their first trophy of the season.

Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan and Fabian Delph also opted to keep the winners medal around their neck following the short flight back from London.

With a large number of the squad with the medals still around their necks upon arrival, the trophy was entrusted with a member of the club’s security team.

City went into the game full of confidence having hammered Chelsea 6-0 at the Etihad Stadium recently, but the game was much more competitive in north London as Maurizio Sarri’s side pushed City to penalties.

While the game descended into chaos minutes earlier when Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to be substituted, Guardiola hailed the focus and personality of his players with the pressure and emotions so high in that moment.

After Jorginho and David Luiz missed for Chelsea, Raheem Sterling was City’s final taker and he showed confidence to convert as City clinched what they hope is the first of four trophies this season as they target a famous quadruple.

‘I’m happy. It went to penalties, so compliment to Chelsea it was incredible performance,’ Guardiola told the club’s official website.

‘The important thing with penalties is personality, and they did it. In penalties, everything can happen. We are happy to win back-to-back (cups) for the first time in our history.

‘I appreciated the guys who have the courage to step forward and say “I want to take one” because of the pressure, but Raheem (Sterling) seems to like this kind of pressure. It was nice.

‘You realise the team Chelsea have, they have champions. After the result two weeks ago (our 6-0 Premier League win at the Etihad), we knew it would be more difficult.’
