Liverpool star Diogo Jota ruled out for the rest of the top four chase in blow for Jurgen Klopp ahead of crucial final three games after suffering foot injury in victory at Manchester United

  • Diogo Jota will miss the final weeks of the season after picking up a foot issue
  • Liverpool forward Jota sustained the injury in the win over Manchester United
  • Jurgen Klopp says the problem is ‘not serious’ but Jota will miss top four race
  • The Reds need three victories to likely secure Champions League qualification

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has been ruled out for the rest of the season due a foot injury, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.

Jota picked up the problem in the pulsating 4-2 victory over Manchester United on Thursday and, as a result, was absent from the club’s crunch clash at West Brom.

In his pre-match press duties, Klopp revealed that the issue is ‘not too serious’, although the winger will sit out the rest of his team’s top-four push.

Klopp told Sky Sports: ‘No good thing without a bad thing – so, we won at Manchester United but Diogo got something with the bone.

‘Not too serious but serious enough to end the season. That’s it.’

Former Wolves man Jota has made 18 Premier League appearances this season, scoring nine goals.

He started the former champions’ last four matches in the top-flight and was taken off at Old Trafford in place of Sadio Mane.

The change did not appear injury-related but the news now points to Jota having been taken off to nurse the setback.

Jota’s 13 goals in all competitions for the Reds have seen him enjoy his first campaign at Liverpool, having departed Molineux for £41million.

The injury crisis at the club has also seen the Portugal international fall victim, however, with Jota missing a total of 18 games due to a knee problem in December.

Without Jota, who will watch on during his second absence this campaign, Liverpool will look to secure the first of the three wins that will likely see them in the top four.

The Reds have just a handful of fixtures left to squeeze into the Champions League spots and nine points from them will set them in good stead.

Last week’s crucial triumph over arch-rivals United propelled Liverpool, who are currently in fifth place, back into contention.

West Brom await this afternoon, before matches against Burnley and Crystal Palace round off a rollercoaster year.

Chelsea and Leicester, who are sat in fourth and third respectively face each other on Tuesday, meaning the door is very much open for Liverpool.

Beating already-relegated West Brom at the Hawthorns will see Liverpool move just a single point behind Chelsea.
