Liverpool ‘target Norwich left back Jamal Lewis in £10m deal’ as Jurgen Klopp looks for cover for Andy Robertson with midfielder James Milner currently providing back up

  • Andy Robertson is the clear first-choice left back for Liverpool currently
  • However, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is looking for cover in the position
  • Alberto Moreno left last summer and James Milner has regularly deputised
  • But the Premier League champions have identified Norwich’s Jamal Lewis

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly eyeing up a £10million move for Norwich left back Jamal Lewis this summer.

Klopp is in need of cover for first-choice Andy Robertson in defence, particularly given Alberto Moreno’s departure last year.

The ever-reliable James Milner has often deputised for the Scotland captain when needed, but in what is expected to be a quiet window, the Reds are ready to take a gamble on a player relegated from the Premier League, according to The Mirror

The report details that Liverpool are excited about Lewis’ potential, particularly given the similarities to Robertson’s situation when he moved to Anfield three years ago.

The Scot was plucked from Hull City, who had also just gone down to the Championship, for just £8m.

That price has since proven to be an absolute snip and there are hopes that a deal for Lewis, a year younger at 22 than when Robertson joined, could prove equally valuable.

Robertson, since usurping Moreno in his first season, has won the Champions League last year, as well as this season’s Premier League.

His crossing ability from out-wide, with Trent Alexander-Arnold equally if not more threatening on the other side, has been one of the trademarks of this all-conquering Liverpool side.

Meanwhile, it is understood Klopp is a huge admirer of Lewis, with his statistics impressing the highly-regarded analytics department at Liverpool.

The 22-year-old is also versatile and able to play a number of different defensive positions, which will give him more opportunities for first-team football, should that be a concern.

A sweetener in any deal could be Liverpool’s young left back Yasser Larouci moving in the opposite direction, after he refused to sign a new contract and looks set to leave the Premier League champions this summer.

Klopp has also reportedly looked at Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly and Brighton’s Ben White as potential cover for Robertson at left back.
