Kai Havertz delighted to have got on the scoresheet for Chelsea in thumping win at Crystal Palace as he admits playing in the false nine position gives him the ‘freedom to go everywhere’… but he insists he needs to ‘prove’ himself more in games

Kai Havertz has admitted how happy he is with the freedom he gets in the false nine position, but insisted he needs to ‘prove’ his attacking talent more regularly.

Chelsea eased past Crystal Palace 4-1 at Selhurst Park with a scintillating attacking performance, helping to dispel memories of the dismal collapse against West Bromwich Albion to lose 5-2 last Saturday.

The German attacking midfielder opened the scoring with a casual placed finish and was instrumental throughout in breaking down the Eagles backline, with the 21-year-old admitting playing at false nine has helped unlock his attacking potential.

But the 13-cap international conceded after the match that he wants to prove his ability on a more consistent basis.

He said: ‘Of course I’m happy. The most important thing is that we won. After the 5-2 defeat (this is) a good game from us. We could have scored a few more but we can be happy. We keep on going on Tuesday.

‘In my position you always want to score. Last few months it wasn’t easy and I didn’t have many chances. Today I got some chances, I could have scored one or two goals more but of course I’m happy.

‘I like it (playing false nine). It’s a good position for me. I have the freedom to go everywhere I want to go. It’s always easy to play with players with these qualities. After one game when you won 4-1 it’s easy to say we’re a good attacking team.

‘We have to prove that on Tuesday again and on Saturday again and after the season we can speak about it. After such a game it’s easy to say I’m at my best. I have to prove it in more games. I will give my best, try to improve and hope I will continue.’

Up next Chelsea host Porto in their Champions League second leg tie against Porto on Tuesday looking to defend a 2-0 lead, before facing Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.
