Jose Mourinho and his backroom staff scooped just shy of an eye-watering £20m when they were sacked by Manchester United, the club’s accounts have revealed.

The Old Trafford club announced their financial results for the final quarter of 2018 on Thursday, with huge outgoings to Mourinho at the end of December.

Broadcast revenue was up 38 per cent to £103.7m, while commercial and sponsorship numbers also increased to give the club a rosy financial picture – apart from the huge figures sent Mourinho’s way.

UNITED’S FINANCES

Broadcasting revenue: £103.7m, up £28.5m or 37.9 per cent

Matchday revenue: £39.0m, up £2.1m or 5.7 per cent

Operating expenses: £160m, up £24.1m or 17.7 per cent

Exceptional items: £19.6m, relating to ‘compensation to the former manager and certain members of the coaching staff for loss of office’

Annual revenue forecast: Between £615m and £630m

Increases in the matchday revenue – which totalled £39m, a 5.7 per cent boost on the previous year – were mainly down to an extra Champions League game being played, while a new broadcasting package for the same competition boosted revenue in that department.

The main talking point of the club’s financial results, though, will certainly be centred around payments to Mourinho and six members of his coaching staff when they were sacked on December 18.

The Portuguese was fired after two-and-a-half years, with the team lagging in sixth in the Premier League table.

Since his exit, United have climbed to fourth under the stewardship of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, while Mourinho has taken on punditry roles with BeIn Sports and Russian network RT.

United, meanwhile, are forecasting annual revenue to be between £615m and £630m and vice chairman Ed Woodward has spoken of the positivity around the club since Mourinho’s departure.

Speaking in light of the financial results, he said: ‘The appointment of Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) and Mike (Phelan) as caretaker manager…has had a positive impact throughout the club.

‘We are delighted with the improvement in the team’s performances since December.’
