Google Travel’s revamp last month may have made the Google Trips app redundant. Google-centric websites found evidence that the latest version update on Android includes messaging that informs users that the app is scheduled to be shut down.

9to5Google spotted a message was found in the app’s APK (Android’s Application Package). A string of codes claimed:

<string name=”activity_label_sunset”>”We’re saying goodbye to Google Trips”</string>
<string name=”sunset_content_big”>”%1$s we’ll stop supporting this app. Tap to learn more.”</string>
<string name=”sunset_dialog_body_text”>Many of your favorite features will live on in other Google products.</string>

However, it is important to note that Google may or may not roll out these features. Therefore, this rumour should be taken with a grain of salt.

The version 1.14 shows an ambiguity with the following strings:

<string name=”sunset_dialog_title”>”We’re saying goodbye to Google Trips %1$s”</string>
<string name=”sunset_dialog_title_past”>”We’ve said goodbye to Google Trips”</string>

Google already indicated the shutdown of the app as it continues to evolve Google Trips and continuously make information available at google.com/travel, and in Google Search and Google Maps.

Google encouraged users that loved the app to seek the features in other Google products. For sure, some of the features such as offline capabilities and maps will make their way in other services like Google Maps and Google Search in the near future.

At the time of writing, Google Trips is still available for download in Play Store.
