In response to the current environmental catastrophe in Mauritius, our team decided to build the prototype of the clean up machine which separates water from oil. After few days intense work and testing we finally have a system that works well and it is ready for production.
The system works similarly to vacuum cleaner. It sucks the water together with the oil. Due to the properties of the oil floating on the surface of the water, we are able to create the system which is pushing the oil to the top of our unit and out to the separated collector. Water that stays on the bottom of the unit is being pushed out to the separated container. Of course the water is not fully purified at this stage therefore the next step of the process is necessary. Complete cost of the unit until this stage is around Rs28500. Please note here that the price of the water pump here in Mauritius is definitely more expensive than in Europe or USA. Unfortunettely those are the prices we have to work with.
For the next stage we are working on shipping in the bacterial enzymes from USA. This particular enzyme is breaking carbohydrates into two byproducts – water and CO2. Is totally not harmful for the environment and people. After separation of water from oil, separated water will be treated by the enzymes and thrown back int the ocean. Areas which will be vacuumed and cleaned with our machine will have to be treated by the mixture of already activated enzymes. Which will be the last stage of rehabilitation process.
We are aiming to rehabilitate the areas in which the access is difficult, like mangroves, beaches. We are not aiming towards large areas which can be cleaned by much bigger units. Our goal is to create 50 units and distribute them between volunteering teams in the affected areas.
The full cost per unit which include the cost of shipping of bacterial enzymes is around Rs 92000. This amount need to be multiplied by 50 in order to reach our goal.
