‘Harry Maguire respectfully maintaining two metres social distance there’: Manchester United defender ridiculed alongside David de Gea after Steven Bergwijn goal in Premier League draw with Tottenham

  • Harry Maguire and David de Gea were mocked on Twitter after Tottenham draw
  • Both players made errors in the lead up to to Steven Bergwijn’s opening goal
  • Maguire was beaten for pace as the Dutchman dribbled towards the United goal
  • De Gea could only parry the Spurs star’s powerful shot into the roof of the net

Harry Maguire and David de Gea were ridiculed on social media during Manchester United‘s Premier League draw with Tottenham on Friday evening.

Spurs star Steven Bergwijn opened the scoring on 27 minutes and Maguire’s defending left a lot to be desired when he was rounded by the Dutchman in midfield.

Bergwijn sprinted beyond the cumbersome Maguire and sent a fierce shot directly towards de Gea, but saw his rasping effort get the better of the United goalkeeper.

Both players were derided on Twitter and former Red Devils captain Roy Keane also berated the pair on Sky Sports during the half-time interval.

One football fan tweeted: ‘Harry Maguire respectfully maintaining two metres social distance there.’

Meanwhile, Paddy Power jokingly said Maguire would need ‘ten minutes’ to walk to the away dressing room at half time, such is his lack of pace.

Although Bergwijn struck the ball with ferocity, a keeper of de Gea’s calibre would be expected to parry to safety. Keane even suggested the Spaniard should have caught it.

Keane has dubbed de Gea the ‘most overrated goalkeeper’ he has seen ‘in a long time’, and one particular statistic is damning. The 29-year-old has conceded six of the last nine shots he has faced for club and country in the month of June.

Match balls have been sprayed with disinfectant by diligent ground staff to ensure the return of Premier League football after coronavirus lockdown, and one person sarcastically claimed: ‘de Gea has hand sanitiser on his gloves.’

United managed to salvage a point in the second half after Paul Pogba was barged by Eric Dier in the penalty area. Bruno Fernandes sent Hugo Lloris the wrong way from the resulting penalty kick but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men missed the opportunity to climb into the top four.
