Government committed to empower the most vulnerable

GIS – 19 August 2020: Government remains committed in providing the necessary assistance and in empowering the vulnerable segments of the society with particular attention for the homeless, said the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, today, at the National Empowerment Foundation (NEF), in Port Louis.

 

The Minister was speaking during an event organised for the homeless by the NEF in the context of World Humanitarian Day 2020, which is celebrated every year on 19 August.  On that occasion, blankets were distributed to the needy.  The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Nandcoomar Bodha, was also present.

 

In her address, Mrs Jeewa-Daureeawoo spoke about the importance of the social housing project and one of the key priorities of that project which is to help the most vulnerable by giving them access to a decent housing as well as the setting up of some 12 000 housing units across Mauritius.

 

The Minister also highlighted the importance of social work which requires perseverance and patience to assist the vulnerable integrate into mainstream society. She reiterated Government’s dedication in fighting poverty and called upon the civil society, Non-Governmental Organisations, and the private sector to team up with the authorities in this endeavour.

 

Moreover, Mrs Jeewa-Daureeawoo recalled that since 2014, to-date, Government has implemented several projects for those who are at the lower rung of the social ladder.  One such projects, currently in the pipeline, is the construction of two rehabilitation centres in Roches Brunes and Vacoas with financial assistance under the Covid-19 Solidarity Fund to cater for the homeless, she indicated.

 

For his part, Minister Bodha, spoke of the need to empower the vulnerable by providing them with adequate social assistance and family support. According to him, these are the requisites towards helping and ensuring that the needy integrate into mainstream society.

 

World Humanitarian Day

 

It is recalled that World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is observed to pay tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service, and to rally support for people affected by crises around the world.

 

This year, the WHD comes as the world continues to fight the Covid-19 pandemic over recent months. Aid workers are overcoming unprecedented access hurdles to assist people in humanitarian crises in 54 countries, as well as in a further nine countries which have been catapulted into humanitarian need by the Covid-19 pandemic.
