GIS – 12 April, 2020: The number of recoveries begins to outstrip the number of new cases, as fourteen additional Covid-19 patients come to add to the list of those who have recovered from the disease, thus, bringing the total number of recoveries to 42. On the other hand, five Covid-19 cases were detected today.

As at date, Mauritius has recorded a total of 324 Covid-19 cases with 270 active cases.

The spokesperson of the National Communication Committee on Covid-19, Dr Zouberr Joomaye, shared the latest figures, this evening, during the daily press briefing through videoconference, from his residence.

He indicated that the five new cases detected result from the 328 tests carried out today. A further 150 Covid-19 test results will become available later this evening, he added.

Speaking about the plasmapheresis treatment which was made possible after two recovered Covid-19 patients donated their blood, Dr Joomaye highlighted that the treatment was administered to two severely ill patients and was proved successful. He, consequently, made an appeal to all recovered Covid-19 patients to step up and get in touch with medical officers of the Blood Bank so as to donate their blood. He recalled that the blood donated will be used in the serum plasma therapy for treating critically ill Covid-19 patients in the future.

With regard to the Covid-19 hotline put in place by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Dr Joomaye stated that some 43 731 phone calls were received out of which 7 128 were referred for medical advice.

At present, 379 persons are still under quarantine in the eight centres across the country.
