Chris Hughton is interested in the vacant managerial job at Bristol City.

The Championship club are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Lee Johnson on Saturday following a run of four consecutive defeats.

Hughton has been out of work since his departure from Brighton & Hove Albion in May last year but is considering a return to management with City, as reported by Sky Sports.

Former Newcastle, Birmingham and Norwich boss Hughton is said to believe that if City have the right backing then they could quickly earn promotion to the Premier League.

During his time at Brighton Hughton was frequently praised but was eventually dismissed following a disappointing run of form.

City, who have five games remaining this season, are currently in 12th place in the Championship. 

Former Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy is also under consideration for the job.

McCarthy possesses vast experience of working in the Championship having won the division’s manager of the month award on five occasions. He won the division with Sunderland in 2005 and Wolves four years later. In addition, he had a lengthy spell in charge of Ipswich.
