A passenger on an American Airlines aircraft to London refused to comply with the U.S federal mandate to wear a face mask. The flight was diverted back to Miami. What kind of person would purchase a first-class seat on an aircraft, lose the money, most likely pay a considerable fine, get placed on a ‘no-fly’ list, and cause inconvenience to 129 other passengers and 14 staff members? Was it all worth it in the end?
Miami police were called by the airline, and officers assisted in the unintentional deplaning of a woman from a flight at Miami International Airport Wednesday evening. According to a representative for the Miami-Dade Police Department, American Airlines staff dealt with the customer on an “administrative” level.
According to an airline official, the woman has been placed on American’s internal no-fly list until the outcome of the investigation. When customers refuse to comply with strict mask regulations designed to limit the spread of COVID-19, airlines have frequently barred them from flying for the length of the pandemic.
According to flight-tracking service FlightAware, the Boeing 777 was diverted less than an hour into the transatlantic flight by the pilots on board.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, airlines recorded nearly 6,000 cases involving unruly passengers last year, with 151 incidents reported in the first two weeks of this year alone. Those who refused to wear masks were the majority of those involved.
