GIS – 17 July, 2019: A Fitness and Wellbeing Festival, is being held today, at Plaza, Rose-Hill, with the objective to valorise the contribution of Mauritian female athletes participating in the 10th Indian Ocean Islands Games (IOIG) which will be held in Mauritius from 19 to 28 July 2019. The Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Local Government and Outer Islands, and Minister of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family WelfareMrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, was present at the launching.

The event, an initiative of the National Woman Council, has as objective to promote the practice of physical activity by girls and women in Mauritius in a friendly atmosphere and making a series of activities, namely Zumba, Latino and Salsa, accessible to them.

Vice Prime Minister Jeewa-Daureeawoo said that Government is creating awareness on the practice of sports by providing numerous facilities to the population adding that sports can act as a catalyst to consolidate national unity.  According to her, sports have a positive impact on the social and overall well-being of a person which includes enhancing self-esteem, learning the value of teamwork and developing greater self-discipline.

Furthermore, she added that the participation of the number of women at the event demonstrates women’s commitment and eagerness for this regional event, and creates a festive and sportive platform for women for the IOIG 2019.

She recalled that currently, only 23% of the population practices sports, which is a clear indication that the population is not adopting a sports culture. To this end, she encouraged the female population to take up a sports discipline so as to promote a healthy lifestyle as well as to create a culture of sports among women and eventually foster the emergence of promising sportspersons.
