‘He is very in control and very calm under pressure,’ said Farrell. ‘He is very ready – not just ready for what he thinks will be in front of him, ready for anything at the same time.

‘He’s been at the top for a very long time. In that regard. Any little insight you can get – from an article, podcast or book – is always good to hear. I have always taken a massive interest in him.’

In Dublin last week, Farrell outfoxed Ireland’s world player of the year Johnny Sexton.

On Sunday he will go up against French No 10 Camille Lopez, with Eddie Jones praising the way Farrell has stepped into the captaincy role in the absence of Dylan Hartley.

‘The 10 has always been an influential player; you’re the bus driver, you’re the conductor,’ said Jones.

‘You’ve got to find the right route and then you’ve got to make sure everyone is doing their role. Owen’s doing that pretty well for us and he’s got a good bloke underneath him in George Ford. Those two together are going a great job in making sure the team is going in the right direction.’
