Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti says Jordan Pickford has his ‘total confidence’

Carlo Ancelotti has backed under-fire Jordan Pickford by saying Everton have no interest in signing a new goalkeeper.

Reports on Friday suggested the Toffees are considering a move for Manchester United‘s Sergio Romero after England No 1 Pickford made a series of errors.

But Ancelotti says Pickford has his ‘total confidence’ and described him as a ‘great goalkeeper.’

Speaking ahead of Everton’s trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday, Ancelotti said: ‘There is a lot of focus on him but, I have to be honest, he started really well and did a fantastic match against Tottenham.

‘I am not really focused on him, like you. He is a great goalkeeper. He has my total confidence.’

Asked whether Everton intended to bring in a new goalkeeper, the Italian replied: ‘We are not looking for this.’

Pickford was at fault for both Fleetwood’s goals in Everton’s midweek Carabao Cup third round tie, which they ultimately won 5-2. 

With Everton coasting at 2-0 thanks to two Richarlison goals at Highbury Stadium, Pickford offered the League One club a route back into the game three minutes after half-time.

Reports on Friday suggested Everton were keeping tabs on Manchester United keeper Romero 

He dithered over a clearance pretty much under his own crossbar and it was charged down to allow Mark Duffy the chance to score.

Alex Iwobi restored Everton’s two-goal cushion but Pickford was indecisive once again.

He started to come out to collect Glenn Whelan’s far-post cross but changed his mind. Ched Evans returned the ball and Pickford was unable to keep out Callum Camps’ overhead kick that was fired straight at him.

Ancelotti didn’t look impressed in his technical area but further goals from Bernard and Moise Kean ensured there would be no upset.

Reports in the Daily Mirror on Friday suggested Everton were monitoring United keeper Romero to provide potential competition for Pickford.

Romero has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford after Dean Henderson returned from his loan spell at Sheffield United to compete with regular No 1 David de Gea this season.
