English rugby chiefs have played down claims that they are preparing a surprise bid to host the 2027 World Cup.

Australia are currently favourites to stage the competition, however their chairman, Hamish McLennan, on Saturday revealed they are expecting a rival bid from Twickenham.

‘The bid will be launched next year with a decision to be made in 2022, so no one other than ourselves have formally indicated that they’ll put a bid forward at this point in time,’ McLennan told ABC.
