Death toll rises to seven in Mauritius, with 169 positive cases

GIS – 02 April 2020: The death toll in Mauritius from the novel coronavirus increased to seven and according to latest figures, cases of infections stand at 169.

The latest situation reports and numbers were provided by the spokesperson of the National Communication Committee on Covid-19, Dr Zouberr Joomaye, this evening, during the daily briefing at the New Treasury Building in Port-Louis.

Dr Vasantrao Gujadhur has again urged the population to abide by the simple guidelines of social distancing and confinement put forward by the Government so that no family undergoes the sufferings of households who have lost a dear one to the Covid-19. He made a strong appeal to all citizens to observe discipline and individual responsibility, and called for unity in the fight against the Covid-19.

The Minister of Tourism, Mr Joe Lesjongard, gave an overview of the situation following the reopening of supermarkets and shops,today, around the country. He expressed satisfaction that the exercise, with Government-imposed regulations and restricted access based on surnames, went on quite well. However, as expected, for a first day there are some fine tunings to be made, he added. The Minister rebuked those who are still failing to adhere to the measures set out by the Government to allow it respond to the Covid-19 emergency and ensure that every household has access to basic food essentials.

Despite this being an unprecedented situation, not only for Mauritius but for the whole world, Government has taken bold but necessary measures to ensure the health and safety of each citizen, underlined Mr Lesjongard. Furthermore, he reassured the population that there is no shortage of essential goods in the country.
