David Beckham has had a mural dedicated to him in Los Angeles – and will have a statue unveiled in the city this weekend.

The mural at the Salvation Army Red Shield Youth and Community Center was painted next to a football pitch that was recently refurbished.

The former England captain played for LA Galaxy between 2007 and 2012 during the twilight years of his stellar career and he is still held in high regard in California.

Beckham was in attendance on Friday as the mural was revealed to the public. He took time out to play football with locals, even having a brief spell as a goalkeeper.

LA is famous for its street art featuring sports stars, with basketballers LeBron James and Kobe Bryant both the subject of colourful murals in the city.

Beckham will have another piece of art dedicated to him on Saturday when Galaxy unveil a statue of him at Dignity Health Sports Park. It will be made public ahead of Saturday’s MLS season-opener against Chicago Fire.

Beckham’s statue is the first of its kind in MLS. The artists responsible for capturing the essence of the former Galaxy, Real Madrid and Manchester United star are Julie and Omri Amrany. The 43-year-old will also be inducted into Galaxy’s Ring of Honor.
