Northampton fly-half Dan Biggar has given Wales an injury scare just a week before their huge Six Nations showdown with England.

Biggar limped off just 19 minutes into Saints’ Premiership clash with Sale on Saturday afternoon, making it look likely Gareth Anscombe will be handed the No 10 jersey for the fixture at the Principality Stadium.

Nothing is confirmed as yet, but Biggar’s left knee was heavily strapped at Franklin’s Gardens – as it has been in several recent matches owing to an injury sustained in the Clermont Auvergne match in the Challenge Cup last month.

It may be that Northampton’s decision to withdraw the 29-year-old was purely precautionary, but Warren Gatland will be desperately seeking answers as to the extent of the damage.

Anscombe was given the nod for Wales’s opening Six Nations tie with France but underwhelmed before Biggar was given a starting berth against Italy in Rome last weekend.

The debate rages on as to who will start against Eddie Jones’s side next week, however should this injury prove a bad one then Gatland’s decision will be easy.

The other option at stand-off is Scarlets playmaker Rhys Patchell, who will make his comeback from a hamstring injury later on Saturday against Treviso.
