Canterbury City FC have a system in place: turn up late for a match and you have to sing in front of the whole changing room as punishment.

Sounds like adequate retribution but that policy may be revised after this weekend with one of their players managing to go viral for his hilarious rendition of Ritchie Valens’ La Bamba hit from 1958.

Mobolaji Dawodu almost broke the internet as the video of him performing the song – which is sung in Spanish and is ranked No 345 on Rolling Stones magazine’s list of 500 greatest songs of all time – quickly done the rounds on numerous social media platforms.

The Canterbury player had to sing in front of all his team-mates after arriving late for their FA Cup Vase match against Biggleswade United – the team Guillem Balague is chairman of – on Saturday.

As daunting as it sounds, Dawodu kept his cool and flourished in the spotlight, showing off his dance moves and even picking up a broom to sing into as everyone in the dressing room laughed and cheered him on.

He was invited on BBC Radio Kent after the club’s post of the video got over 1,000 retweets and almost 5,000 likes.

It was obvious Dawodu possessed a natural flair for showmanship, but the Canterbuty star played down his display and admitted: ‘I was driving to the game thinking: “I know I’m going to have to sing, so what can I pull out?”

‘I just tried to push the boat out a little bit.’ The pre-match show certainly seemed to give the Canterbury players a boost with the side going on to beat Biggleswade 2-1.

They will now face Cray Valley PM in the first leg of their semi-final on Saturday, March 16 before the return leg a week later.
