Bob and Mike Bryan edged the battle of the siblings at the Delray Beach Open as the American brothers beat Neal and Ken Skupski to win the doubles event and claim their 117th career title.

The match marked the first time since 1977 that two sets of brothers went head-to-head in an ATP tour-level final.

The 7-6, 6-4 victory marked the Bryan brothers first title together since April 2018, and the first since Bob returned to action following a hip resurfacing operation.

Two-time Wimbledon winner and former British No 1 Andy Murray is undergoing the same process as he continues to battle with long-standing issues around his hip.

Writing on the BryanBros Instagram account alongside a photo of his wife and children, Bob wrote: ‘6 months ago when I was learning how to walk again, I prayed I would one day feel healthy enough to play professional tennis again.

‘Thanks to these four who never left my side and kept me smiling when at times I wanted to cry. Today was a dream.’

At the age of 40, the Bryan brothers accept they are in the final stages of their career but are determined to add as many titles as they can before they call time on their professional careers.

Having gone ahead through a break in the third game, it was an ideal start but the Bryan brothers, considered by many to be the greatest doubles team in tennis history, soon broke back and took the first set on a tie-break.

The second set was equally dramatic as the American brothers saved three break points before sealing their fifth title at Delray Beach 6-4.

With 16 major titles to their name, it remains unclear whether the pair have one eye on concluding their careers at the US Open in New York in September.

Attention now switches to Acapulco and then Indian Wells in California in an event that will see some of the game’s greatest players take to the court both in singles and in doubles.
