‘There are several issues in the whole structure at Arsenal – it will be resolved this week’: David Luiz’s agent Kia Joorabchian sets a FIVE-DAY deadline on the error-prone defender’s future as he refuses to say whether he will stay

  • David Luiz remains in limbo with his contract at Arsenal expiring on June 30
  • Luiz has expressed his desire to stay but is waiting on the board’s decision
  • His agent Kia Joorabchian has set a deadline of June 23 for Arsenal to decide
  • Here’s how to help people impacted by Covid-19

David Luiz’s future at Arsenal has not yet been finalised due to the coronavirus pandemic but all will become clear by June 23 at the latest, his agent Kia Joorabchian has revealed.

Luiz is in the final few days of his contract at the Emirates Stadium – having joined on a one-year deal from Chelsea last summer until June 30, 2020.

Talks have been ongoing over fresh terms for a few months now without a conclusion with Luiz himself expressing a desire to stay at the club – despite some woeful displays including his red-card outing during the 3-0 defeat at Manchester City on Wednesday night.

And speaking about the delays, Joorabchian told talkSPORT: ‘The contract situation has dragged on not because of the will of David or Arsenal to finalise but really the situation that has occurred with the pandemic.

‘The situation from Arsenal’s point of view will be resolved this week. We will find out by June 23.’

Luiz’s latest calamity display against Manchester City didn’t help his cause among club supporters who took to social media to lambaste him.

Coming on as a substitute in the first half with the score at 0-0 the Brazilian was at fault for the first goal before he was sent off after the interval for hauling down Riyad Mahrez in the penalty area.

Speaking post-match, the 33-year-old fronted up to his mistakes at the Etihad Stadium.

‘It was not the team’s fault, it was my fault.’ The defender then went on to explain that the contract negotiations have been playing on his mind too.

‘I take the decision to play, I should take another decision in the last two months that I didn’t. Today the team did well, especially after we went down to 10 men, the coach is amazing, all the players did amazing, it was just my fault.

‘I should have taken a different decision in the last two months, and I didn’t, it was all about my contract, if I stay here or not. I have 14 days more to be here and that’s it, today it was my fault,’ Luiz continued as he implied his contract talks affected his poor performance.

‘I should have taken a different decision to decide my future, to try to decide as early as possible, but I didn’t. I don’t want to use it as an excuse.

‘I love to be here, that is why I continue to train hard and I came here today, that is why I try to do everything, that’s why I said to all the players nobody huge me to speak, it’s me, I have to show my face and be here so I want to say, the coach knows, the coach wants me to stay, so it is just we are waiting for the decisions.’
