Alliance Morisien wins majority with 38 elected

GIS – 11 November, 2019: The National Assembly elections in the Republic of Mauritius held on 07th November 2019 resulted in the victory of Alliance Morisien (MSM-ML) which has secured a maximum of 38 seats out of 62 seats in the National Assembly. Led by the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, the alliance consisting primarily of members of Government in office from 2014, will now constitute a new Government for another five-year term.

The second and third positions go to the L’Alliance Nationale (PTr-PMSD) and the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM) with fourteen seats and eight seats respectively. For Rodrigues, the Organisation du Peuple de Rodrigues won two of the three seats.

Moreover, following the proclamation of the results of the 2019 elections on 08th November 2019, the Electoral Supervisory Commission has under the power conferred upon the latter and according to the set regulations appointed a further eight members as Best Losers to form part of the National Assembly. The candidates have been selected from amongst the unsuccessful candidates who received the highest number of votes, and are appointed with the aim of balancing the parliamentary representation of different ethnic groups. They are namely: four from the Alliance Morisien; three from the L’Alliance Nationale; and one from the MMM.

Some 941 719 electors were registered in the Republic to cast their vote for the 2019 National Assembly Elections and the turnout on polls day was 76.84%. However, the percentage of citizens who went to cast their vote saw an increase of 2% over the 2014 General Elections.

The three main political parties namely the L’Alliance Morisien; the L’Alliance Nationale; and the MMM had each presented a list of 60 candidates in the 21 constituencies which also include Rodrigues and Agalega.
