GIS– 21 May, 2019: The Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research has embarked a major project which aims at revamping the whole Education and Training System, especially the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, thus ensuring that the children of Mauritius have access to quality education.

It is against this backdrop that a workshop on Curriculum Development conducted by ITE Education Services Singapore was held, yesterday, at the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development House, in Phoenix.  The Minister of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, was present at the opening ceremony.

In her address, the Minister pointed out that the budget for TVET has substantially been increased over the past years with the aim of creating a better Mauritius for one and all.  In a bid to increase quality access to TVET, the Sir Gaëtan Duval Hotel Training Centre is being extended to provide additional facilities for training in the hospitality sector, and the Le Chou Training Centre in Rodrigues has been extended to provide additional facilities to youth in Rodrigues, she added.

Furthermore, the three campuses of Polytechnics Mauritius are providing additional state-of-the-art facilities for students to move further up the ladder in the TVET sector. The Ministry, Mrs Dookun-Luchoomun said, has established a partnership and is working with the Harvard University to uplift the TVET sector in order to enable students, after their ‘O’ level, to have better opportunities to choose a profession and reach the highest level possible in their career path.

Speaking about the Curriculum Development workshop, the Minister outlined that it is directed to make participants proficient in designing and developing curricula which meet the needs of the job. With the rise of Artificial Intelligence, she said, soft skills are increasingly important as they are the type of skills robots cannot automate. The soft skills that employers need the most today are creativity, persuasion, collaboration, adaptability as well as time management, and due consideration must be given to the above while developing the new curricula, she added.
