Shock injury rules Aussie UFC superstar Robert Whittaker out of action for MONTHS and force him to miss fight with Marvin Vettori
Australian star Robert Whittaker has revealed an injury he picked up while training means he won’t be fit for his upcoming clash with Marvin Vettori at UFC 275.
The former middleweight champion announced the news on Twitter on Thursday afternoon.
‘Sorry to say guys due to an injury I took early in the camp I’m not going to be able to compete in June,’ he wrote.
‘I did everything I could to get it right but it’s not healing in time. All this means is that I’ll be back in the octagon a couple of months later and I’ll be better than ever.’
The Vettori bout was to be Whittaker’s first in the UFC since losing to Israel Adesanya at UFC 271 in February.
It’s not the first time injury has ruined a big fight for ‘Bobby Knuckles’.
In 2019 a freak hernia that could have proved fatal had it been hit during a bout forced him to pull out of his UFC 234 clash with Kelvin Gastelum just hours before it was scheduled to begin.
An injury picked up during training left him unable to defend his title against Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 in 2018, and he broke his hand in the first round of his win over Yoel Romero, which he also got through despite a hurt knee.
