Andreas Christensen ‘will complete formalities for his move to Barcelona this week’ and will join when his Chelsea contract expires in the summer.

The Denmark international defender, 25, has reportedly already completed the first part of his Barcelona medical and completed his checks on Monday ahead of a free transfer.

That will only leave Christensen to sign his contract, which is expected to be a five-year deal worth around £5million-per-season.

Barcelona-based newspaper Diario Sport report the Nou Camp club successfully outbid Bayern Munich for Christensen, who failed to agree a new Chelsea contract beyond June.

The centre-back was keen to join the LaLiga club, who have pursued him since last summer.

Christensen represents the first addition to manager Xavi Hernandez’s rebuild for next season with plenty more signings likely to follow.

Barca are well-placed to qualify for the Champions League, sitting third in the LaLiga table, level on points with Atletico Madrid and two ahead of Real Betis in fifth spot.

Xavi will hope his squad will be equipped to compete with Real Madrid for the title next season and also perform better in Europe’s top competition, which they exited at the group stage this season.

Christensen, meanwhile, will concentrate on securing Chelsea a top four position in the Premier League, with the FA Cup and Champions League also in play this season.

The defender was on the bench at Burnley on Saturday following an achilles tendon problem and could return to the team at Norwich City on Thursday night or at home to Newcastle United this Sunday.

The Blues take a two-goal lead to Lille for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie next Wednesday and then head to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
