Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said: ‘I wish Kepa [Arrizabalaga] was in goal. My god, what a save.

It’s a really good initial save but to get up and make the next save… Mane will be disappointed. Credit to the goalkeeper, absolutely magnificent.

Ex-Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink claimed that: ‘if Chelsea wins the game, he is the man of the match.’

Mendy joined Chelsea from Lille in 2020 and has won the Uefa Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup during his time with the Blues.

There was drama elsewhere in the game, as Liverpool thought they had opened the scoring in the Carabao Cup final when Joel Matip headed home in the 67th minute.

Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a free-kick to the back post where Sadio Mane nodded the ball back across goal for the Reds defender to finish from close range.

However, it was ruled that Virgil van Dijk – who was blocking Chelsea‘s Reece James – was offside in the build up and the goal was chalked off following a VAR check.
