GIS – 10 May 2019: The Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, Dr Patrick Ngugi Njoroge, paid a courtesy call, this afternoon, on the Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.

In a statement, Governor Njoroge stated that he had a cordial meeting with the Prime Minister during which he briefed the latter on the partnership that the Central Bank of Kenya has undertaken with the Bank of Mauritius.  The Prime Minister, he underlined, has expressed satisfaction on the progress being made between both Banks in terms of strengthening collaborative ties.  The ongoing collaboration is the outcome of the discussions that Prime Minister Jugnauth had with the President of the Republic of Kenya, Mr Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, during his State Visit in Mauritius in April 2019, he added.

According to Mr Njoroge, the State Visit gave both countries the impetus to bring Mauritius-Kenya institutions together to work on common issues and areas of interest.  In addition, he emphasised the need for central banks being at the apex of financial systems, to collaborate and find common ways of strengthening the financial system.

Moreover, the Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya indicated that the Mauritius-Kenya cooperation is aligned with the mandates of both institutions, and pointed out that it relates to ways of bringing forth improvements in the banking area, supervision of institutions, operation of the National Payment System and in the FinTech area.  In order for the African continent to progress, it is essential to partner with supporting countries, as Kenya is currently doing with Mauritius, he recalled.
