Republic of Mauritius- New Industrial Property Bill to be introduced shortly

GIS – 10 May 2019: Mauritian laws regarding intellectual property rights will be modernised through the introduction, by the end of May, of a new piece of legislation on Industrial Property, that is the new Industrial Property Bill, announced the Minister of Public Infrastructure and Land Transport, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Nandcoomar Bodha, on Tuesday 7 May 2019 at the National Assembly, in Port Louis.

 

The Minister was intervening in the context of debates on the Second Reading of the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council Bill.  The new Industrial Property Bill, he said, will help create the right ecosystem for innovation to take place across the economy.  It will be disseminated among stakeholders for consultations before it is introduced in Parliament.

 

According to Mr Bodha, the new Industrial Property Bill will also cover the whole gamut of elements of Industrial Property, namely patent, and will provide a holistic framework and promote innovation and research, through innovation and research, on the one hand, and protect intellectual property assets, on the other hand.

 

In the same vein, the Minister indicated that Government is collaborating with the United Nations to establish and host the United Nations Technology Innovation Labs (UNTIL).  The Labs will serve as a platform for practitioners, academia, Government, start-up companies, creative minds and established technical giants to promote the development of new and innovative technologies, he pointed out.

 

This initiative, Minister Bodha further remarked, is in line with the United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development to provide assistance to Member States.  Mauritius is going to be a pilot State in the National Implementation Strategy, he added.
