Gervonta Davis’ weigh-in problems surfaced once again as he was forced to step back on the scales ahead of his fight with Hugo Ruiz.

Davis weighed 130.4lbs on his first visit before eventually meeting his contractual obligation at 129.8lbs, only just under the super featherweight limit of 130.

Ruiz weighed in at 129.5lbs ahead of Saturday night’s WBA Super Featherweight Championship fight in Los Angeles.

It is not the first time Davis, who is promoted by Floyd Mayweather, has had problems making weight.

In May 2017 he made weight on his third attempt ahead of facing Liam Walsh. Three months later he was stripped of his IBF title after coming in 2lbs over the limit for his defence against Francisco Fonseca.

He admitted that his training regime had ‘got off track a bit’ after he went to New York to watch Keith Thurman defeat Josesito Lopez last month.

‘I was in New York. I was heavy there, but once I got back into the groove and back to training it was fine. I feel fine. Making 130 is not a problem.

‘It’s not a distraction. I feel fine. I’m not dehydrated and my face isn’t sunken. I’ll be ready to go tomorrow.’

Ruiz was not shocked by the weigh-in results: ‘It’s kind of expected. He’s missed weight before, so it’s not surprising.

‘I feel great at this weight of 130 pounds. This is the weight I want to be at. I’d fight every month if I could.’
