Celtic’s move for Eddie Howe COLLAPSES after talks break down over his backroom team, as pressure mounts on Scottish giants to appoint Neil Lennon’s successor before pre-season

  • Eddie Howe was Celtic’s No 1 option to be their new permanent manager
  • However talks have broken down over Howe’s backroom team demands
  • Celtic are looking at alternatives with the search for a new boss set to go on
  • They are looking to wrestle back control in Scotland after Rangers won the title

Celtic‘s quest to land Eddie Howe as their new manager has collapsed.

The Parkhead club hoped to unveil their number one target to replace Neil Lennon early next week.

Despite Bournemouth‘s defeat to Brentford in the Championship play-off semi-final, however, talks to bring his former Bournemouth Technical Director Richard Hughes and first team coaches Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone to Glasgow have struck a wall.

And, after weeks of negotiations and discussion Howe is ready the plug unless his backroom team join him in Glasgow.

The 43-year-old held talks with Celtic’s major shareholder Dermot Desmond in London two months ago.

In a statement launching season ticket renewals on Wednesday, Celtic told an increasingly irate fanbase of plans ‘to finalise the appointment of the next manager shortly.’ And they believed they had their man.

Howe has been out of work since leaving Bournemouth following their relegation last year

With players due back for pre-season training on June 17 pressure to get a new boss in place and rebuild a squad in transition is now intense.

The Parkhead club also spoke to Roy Keane and former Manchester City under-23 coach Enzo Maresca before the Italian penned a deal with Parma.

Celtic have never publicly confirmed that Howe was their top target and failed to response to Sportsmail requests for comment.
