‘There is a god!’: England supporters celebrate Eric Dier’s omission from Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2020… despite his key role during memorable World Cup campaign just three years ago

  • Eric Dier has been left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020
  • The Tottenham defender was a key part of their success at the 2018 World Cup
  • Fans reacted in jubilation to the news that the 27-year-old has been omitted

England supporters have greeted the news that Eric Dier has been omitted from the Euro 2020 squad with glee.

Gareth Southgate named his provisional 33-man side on Tuesday afternoon, but the Tottenham defender was nowhere to be seen.

Dier cemented his place in Three Lions folklore when he scored the winning penalty during the last-16 penalty shoot-out against Colombia at the 2018 World Cup in Russia

However, all good will from fans appeared to be out the window when news he had been left out was met with celebration on Twitter.

User Ben Smith set the tone when he said: ‘No Eric Dier in the England squad. Hallelujah!’, less than 10 minutes after the initial announcement.

User @JGSpurs mentioned: ‘We don’t have to watch Eric Dier all summer,’ while attaching a clip of characters from the American series of the Office celebrating with champagne.

Another user used Arsenal fan TV to illustrate his feelings,  @SZNSancho7 stating posting a video of Robbie Lyle and others celebrating to greet the news of the 27-year-old’s omission.

Others suggested that England’s chances of winning the Euros had risen exponentially as a result of Dier having no role in the squad.

Dier was one of a handful of surprise names left out of Southgate’s initial squad  – with Danny Ings and Patrick Bamford also failing to secure a place.

Dier has 45 caps for his country, and had been named in each of the last two squads for major tournaments.

He was part of Roy Hodgson’s squad that travelled to France for Euro 2016 – scoring the side’s opening goal in their first group game against Russia with a ferocious free kick.

He appeared in all but one of England’s seven gamed in Russia three years ago, and took the captain’s armband for the final group game against Belgium.
