  • A sudden-death decider was needed to beat Linda Hunt and Norma Kirby from Newbury & Crookham

Weybrook Park’s Janet Swift and Sue Gale had to work hard to win their spot in the fourth round of the Daily Mail Foursomes after a marathon sudden-death decider.

With the wind picking up it took a nail-biting four extra holes before the best friends snatched victory when Gale sank a tricky downhill putt to knock out Linda Hunt and Norma Kirby from Newbury & Crookham after the visitors ran into trouble.

‘It was a bit of a battle,’ said Swift, who had never played in such a long match. ‘It was nip and tuck all the way. You have to keep the concentration going after such a long time.’

The Hampshire pair are delighted to take another step closer to the finals in the world’s largest amateur golf competition, which this year will be held at Slaley Hall in Northumberland.

Swift said: ‘I do enjoy the format. Sue hits it a long way and I’m fairly steady, so we make quite a good partnership.

‘We play a lot together socially as well as in competitions and we’re best friends. It’s good.’
