Chris Eubank Jr backs up his promise to donate £10,000 winnings to a children’s charity after his bet that Canelo Alvarez would knock out his rival Billy Joe Saunders came through

  • Mexican boxer Alvarez comprehensively beat Saunders in Dallas earlier in May
  • A brutal Canelo uppercut in the eighth round saw the Briton quit on his stool
  • Eubank Jr has had a bitter rivalry with Saunders since their 2014 showdown
  • The 31-year-old bet 10 grand on Canelo winning by KO, TKO or disqualification
  • He mocked Saunders after the first loss of his career and has donated the money

Chris Eubank Jr has delivered on his promise to donate £10,000 to charity if his bet on Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez knocking out rival Billy Joe Saunders came in.

Eubank Jr, 31, bet 10 grand at even odds that Alvarez would beat Saunders by KO, TKO or disqualification in Dallas, Texas earlier in May.

After the Mexican fighter’s victory, the son of Chris Eubank pulled through on his vow to give the money away, donating to Brighton-based children’s charity Rockinghorse, as shown on his Twitter account.

The Hove-based boxer tweeted with the simple caption: ‘I’m a man of my word,’ and pictures of him handing over the cheque.

Eubank Jr and fellow Brit Saunders have had bad blood between them since their showdown back in November 2014, which Saunders won by split decision to retain the British middleweight title.

He therefore stated openly before the fight his belief Canelo would win comfortably, telling Talksport: ‘(They are) Different levels. I don’t really feel like Saunders has improved since he last fought me.

Eubank Jr had said Canelo is a ‘different level’ to Saunders and strongly backed a knockout win

‘He is the same guy. I am levels and levels above what I was when I first got into the ring with Saunders. I feel like he is the same guy, that guy can’t beat someone like Canelo.’

He placed the bet with bookmaker William Hill before the bout, and captioned it:  ‘The bet has been placed! Billy Schmoe Saunders to get cleaned out by Canelo Alvarez this Saturday. Oh… & the 10k I stand to win will all go to charity.’

Saunders, despite being undefeated before the fight, was a huge underdog against four-weight world champion Canelo and that was the way it proved, with a brutal uppercut in the eighth round causing Saunders to quit on his stool.

And Eubank Jr has now donated the money to Brighton-based children's charity Rockinghorse
