Bye bye Boothroyd! England Under 21s boss Aidy pays the price for dire European Championship group-stage exits as he leaves the FA after seven years, with Frank Lampard and Paul Tisdale eyed as a successor
Aidy Boothroyd’s tenure as England Under-21 manager has ended after a wretched European Championship campaign.
The Football Association confirmed on Friday morning that Bothroyd’s contract is not being renewed.
The 50-year-old is leaving the FA’s set-up rather than being rehoused elsewhere in the system.

Boothroyd oversaw England’s humiliating group stage exit from the competition last month
England finished bottom of their Euro 2021 group after defeats by Switzerland and Portugal last month.
A last-gasp Croatia goal in the final group game saw them miss out on qualifying on goal difference. But the general performances drew strong criticism of Boothroyd, who has been at St George’s Park this week before ending his seven-year spell at the FA.
‘It has been the greatest privilege to lead England teams into high-profile tournaments,’ he said.
‘While we didn’t finish in the way we wanted, I am very proud to have been able to work so closely with players who I know will go on to have remarkable international careers and to have experienced some very special moments with them over the years.
‘I would like to thank my staff and all of the incredible support team that have done so much to help us remain competitive against other elite nations.
‘In every single get-together they embraced our unique challenge of rightly prioritising the needs of the senior team while ensuring we gave our all to try and get a positive performance and result.’
Gareth Southgate, England’s senior manager, said: ‘I’d like to thank Aidy for his wholehearted support and dedication to developing English players and coaches across the last seven years.
‘His pride in working with all of our development teams has shone through and his support of the senior team has been greatly appreciated. I wish him every success on the next step of his career.’
