GIS – 12 April, 2019: The Duke of Edinburgh Award programme, aiming to enhance the skills and aptitudes of 198 firefighters, was launched today by the Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Local Government and Outer Islands, Minister of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, at the Coromandel Fire Station.

In her address, the Vice-Prime Minister pointed out that this programme will contribute significantly to the character-building of firefighters as their duties require courage, hard work and determination. The Duke of Edinburgh programme, she said, will help these young people foster growth, personal discovery, perseverance and service to the community.

Moreover, Mrs Jeewa-Daureeawoo lauded the challenging work of firefighters and emphasised that Government is committed in ensuring that the Mauritius Fire Rescue Service (MFRS) delivers efficient services and in improving the conditions for firefighters to perform their duties in a safe and efficient manner. On this score, she highlighted that a budget of some Rs 570 million has been allocated to the MFRS and underscored from 2015 till date some 476 firefighters have been recruited to serve Mauritius.

The Vice-Prime Minister indicated that different units have been created to reinforce the MFRS.  They are: a Rope and Rescue Unit launched in 2016; a Swift Water Rescue Unit in 2017; a Fire Investigation Unit in October 2017; and, an Enforcement Unit created in January 2018 to reinforce inspections in buildings.

Moreover, Mrs Jeewa-Daureeawoo underlined that significant changes have been brought in the system of issuing fire certificates, whereby these certificates have now a validity period of one to three years depending on the risks level of the buildings. The need for the elaboration of a Fire Code in ensuring the safety and prevention of any fire outbreak in buildings, was also highlighted by the Vice-Prime Minister.
