The wealthy is probably bored to their skull after spending months in quarantine as private jets zoom in Palma de Mallorca as soon as borders reopened.

The Balearic Islands have seen a surge in private jet arrivals with the destination receiving more private jets than any other airport in the Mediterranean, representing 30% of air traffic arrivals into Palma airport since the reopening of the borders in mid-June.

Pedro Homar, managing director of Palma Tourist Board, said: “since tourism was reactivated in mid-June, we have seen a rise in the number of tourists arriving by private jet to Palma airport and looking for upmarket stays in small boutique and private properties. Palma is the ideal destination for those seeking a short-haul luxury break with great weather, Michelin star quality cuisine and plenty of beautiful hotels and private villas.”

Palma, has one of the highest percentages of four and five-star properties in Spain, accounting for 90% of the city’s total hotel inventory. Homar predicts that Palma will receive more high-spend tourists over the next weeks; particularly those seeking exclusivity and privacy. “We welcome all kinds of travellers to Palma and we have accommodation to suit a range of budgets but this number of private jet arrivals certainly indicates an appetite for luxury travel.”

Many European airlines have resumed Palma flights from the UK, but flying in a private jet is also in high demand for those looking for exclusivity, flexibility, luxury and comfort. A report carried out by the Air Charter Service (ACS), the world’s largest aircraft charter broker, shows that there was a 258% surge in UK-based enquiries around private jet hire over the first weekend in July, with Palma being one of the most popular search destinations. There are several companies operating shorts flights between London and Palma by private aircraft of all types and sizes, meaning that travellers can choose from a wide range of services to fit their needs, group size and budget.

Palma de Mallorca’s airport is conveniently located just a 12-minute drive away from the vibrant city centre of Palma, has a dedicated private jet terminal (FBO) which operates 24/7 including a VIP lounge and dedicated security.

Experts claimed that luxury tourism will rebound the fastest once travel resumes. The top 1% will be the movers and shakers of the new chapter of travel.
