This is the ship we lost last night, The Sir Gaetan… I took this photo on the 11th of August as we were volunteering to search the bay at Mahebourg for oil spills – we came so close to it with a boat – even waved hello to the crew as we passed next to them… and they kindly waved back… for such is the way of the sea…
.
Deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives – My thoughts and prayers go to them and to those who went through this ordeal and survived as well. I cannot imagine their pain.
.
Let us all work towards justice for these men and their families… As I've said in my live today there is ONE major question that needs to be answered – Why were they asked to go get that barge – that ultimately collided with the ship and fractured it – in bad weather conditions – and that too at night?
.
What was the urgency?
.
I will tell this story again here of how one of the Captains (there are 2 in a shift system) whom we call TugMasters, tied the life jacket of one of his men and asked him to jump into the life raft… the man lived to tell this story – the Captain did not…
.
This man died a hero and joins the list of legends who have given their life for their fellow comrades or crewmen at sea…
.
We will seek justice for all of them…
.
And in that view we need to point out that if the authorities had NOT wasted 12 days to act while the MV Wakashio was still intact – THESE MEN WOULD NOT HAVE DIED TODAY…
.
Their deaths, no matter the immediate situation, lie directly on Pravind Jugnauth. It is his INACTION then that resulted in this situation today.
.
That is UNDENIABLE.
