‘We weren’t in a situation where we had to sell at any cost’: Manchester United dealt further blow in £108m Jadon Sancho pursuit with Borussia Dortmund chief insisting they are financially secure despite £45m losses

Manchester United have been issued a hands-off warning from Borussia Dortmund over their star winger Jadon Sancho, with the club’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke insisting they do not need to sell him to balance the books.

Sancho is United’s No 1 target this summer but the clubs have been at loggerheads over Dortmund’s £108million asking price.

Dortmund have announced a club loss of £45m for this season – with the coronavirus pandemic the prime culprit for this deficit.

However, despite the loss of income Watzke says Dortmund are not under pressure to sell one of their main assets – with the club having been well-run for the past decade.

Speaking about Sancho, Watzke said: ‘We weren’t in a situation where we had to sell at any cost.’

And expanding about the club’s financial situation he continued: ‘We made three-digit million profits and wrote deep black numbers. Then corona came and everything changed a little.

‘We have succeeded in generating such a high level of liquidity that we can withstand this pandemic for a very long time.’
