Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has retired from playing and become the full-time manager of Anderlecht.

The 34-year-old joined the Belgian side in a player-manager role back in May 2019 but has now hung up his boots and will take on the full managerial role at the club.

Anderlecht only achieved an eighth-placed finish in the Jupiler Pro League last season, as Kompany amassed 15 league appearances, scoring once.

Whilst he began the campaign in the half player, half managerial capacity, he quickly took a step back shortly after the campaign had began in order to focus on the playing side after the club’s worst start to a season in 21 years.

He relinquished his tactical and match day duties as he passed the responsibilities onto head coach Simon Davies.

Davies left the club in February as Frank Vercauteren’s influence grew on the team. However, after not seeing eye-to-eye, the club is set for another switch-up with Kompany in the hotseat.

The central defender made his name at Manchester City in 2008 when he joined the Premier League side from Hamburger SV and played his first season primarily as a defensive midfielder.

He quickly became the captain at Man City and led them to their first ever Premier League title in the 2011/12 season. Kompany went on to win three more league titles with the Citizens.

He also won two FA Cups, four League cups and two Community Shields as he became widely viewed as a club legend.

Off the pitch, Kompany continued to lead by example as he set up the Tackle4MCR fund alongside the mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham to fight homelessness in the area.

He is also an official FIFA ambassador for charity SOS children, where he helps provide an education and safe living environments for children in poverty.
