FA Cup winners will NOT climb famous Wembley steps to receive the trophy due to Covid-19 concerns… with either Chelsea or Arsenal set to be presented the cup on the pitch

  • There will be no royal presence at Wembley Stadium for the FA Cup final
  • Prince William will conduct prize giving after the game via a videolink
  • Emeli Sande will record the Cup final anthem Abide With Me in advance

The FA Cup-winning squad will not be allowed to climb the famous Wembley steps to lift the trophy on Saturday.

The sight of the victors going up to the Royal Box to lift the Cup is a part of the competition’s history, but this year’s trophy lift will take place on the pitch due to concerns over Covid-19.

Players are banned from walking up to the Royal Box because of the coronavirus protocols.

There will be no formal presentation, with the winning captain collecting the trophy from a plinth, confirming Sportsmail’s story earlier this month.

Prince William, who is president of the FA, will mark the culmination of the Heads Up campaign, which has raised awareness of mental health, with an event in Norfolk on cup final day.

Singer Emeli Sande will record the Cup final anthem Abide With Me in advance from the roof of the stadium.
