Premier League clubs set for crunch talks over five substitutes allowance

Premier League clubs will hold crunch talks on Thursday aimed at resolving the divisive five substitutes allowance before next season.

Last week, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) signed off on proposals to allow clubs to continue making five substitutions next season.

The rule change was introduced ahead of the season restart as a means to reduce the physical strain on players, many of whom have played as many as three games a week.

However, the Premier League have not confirmed whether they will continue with allowing extended substitutes for next season or whether they will revert to the original rule of permitting three replacements.

There is a League meeting scheduled for Friday, where it is understood the issue will be discussed among clubs for the first time.

It is understood clubs will not vote on the change on Friday, but discussions will prove pivotal towards deciding whether the new rule will be implemented next season.
