‘It’s a little like Christmas’: Jurgen Klopp on finally getting to unwrap the gift he’s been waiting a month for as footage emerges of Liverpool’s light show for Premier League trophy presentation on the Kop

  • Liverpool will get their hands on the Premier League trophy on Wednesday night
  • Jurgen Klopp’s side ended their 30-year league title drought last month
  • A special presentation will take place on the Kop after the visit of Chelsea

Jurgen Klopp has likened Liverpool‘s long wait to lift the Premier League trophy to Christmas as they get set to finally get their hands on the title.

And it comes after footage emerged on social media of the glitzy light show that has been planned at Anfield as Jordan Henderson prepares to lift the trophy on a temporary stage built into the Kop.

Liverpool’s title was mathematically confirmed nearly a month ago when Chelsea beat Manchester City, prompting jubilant scenes across the city.

Though Klopp once again urged supporters to abide by social distancing guidelines that were flouted in June, he and his players are getting ready to celebrate at an empty Anfield on Wednesday night.

The special ceremony is believed to be costing the club in the millions, with Sir Kenny Dalglish set to present the Premier League trophy to Henderson.

Klopp admits it could be another emotional night after he fought back the tears on live TV when Liverpool’s triumph was confirmed a month ago.

He said: ‘We have been champions for a month now. A bit like Christmas, you know you’re getting a specific present but you are still excited. It will be special.

‘I’ve never touched a Premier League trophy ever before for obvious reasons.

‘I am absolutely delighted the boys have this moment, they deserve it. They deal with so many setbacks in the last few years.

‘We won the title already this season but have prepared for it for two or three years. It will be 100 per cent emotional again. How emotional I don’t know, we have to wait and see to feel them.’

He added: ‘There is a very important football game before that. After I will be in best spirits – on a professional basis one of the greatest days of my life to get our hands on this trophy. I will be proud of the boys and what we did together. It’s a milestone.

‘I’m completely in the competition mood and I know the boys are. We have to…. what do you say? Put the blinkers on!’

Dalglish will be joined at the ceremony — during which medals will be presented to Klopp’s squad — by Richard Masters, the Premier League’s chief executive.

This will be a different kind of ceremony to the ones that usually take place at the end of a campaign, when presentations tend to be on the pitch.

Liverpool have started the preparations for the occasion by removing a huge section of seats towards the front of the Kop and the event will have strict health and safety protocols in place.
