N’Golo Kante to miss Chelsea’s visit to Liverpool as French midfielder struggles to recover from hamstring injury with Frank Lampard’s side needing positive result at Anfield to make sure of top four finish

  • Kante has been struggling with hamstring issue since going off in Watford game
  • Lampard confirmed he won’t be fit enough to face Liverpool on Wednesday
  • French midfielder has missed three league games and FA Cup semi-final
  • His absence is a blow to Chelsea’s hopes of finishing in the top four

N’Golo Kante won’t be fit enough to play for Chelsea against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Blues manager Frank Lampard confirmed the midfielder, who suffered a hamstring injury in their win over Watford on July 4, is still sidelined.

Kante has missed three Premier League fixtures against Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Norwich City plus Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester United.

And he won’t feature at Anfield either as Liverpool prepare to receive the Premier League trophy post-match.

Chelsea’s midfield of Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic was highly effective against United at Wembley and Lampard will be tempted to continue with a similar 3-4-3 configuration against a Liverpool side who have slacked off a little since they secure the title.

Chelsea still have plenty to play for including a top four finish that would see them qualify for next season’s Champions League.

They currently sit third in the table but are just a point ahead of Leicester City in fourth and Manchester United in fifth.

Dropped points at Liverpool could allow United to overtake them if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team beat West Ham at Old Trafford.

Chelsea host Wolves, who are themselves hoping to seal Europa League qualification, at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, the final day of the Premier League season.

They will hope Frenchman Kante regains match fitness in time for their FA Cup final meeting with Arsenal on August 1 and the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie away to Bayern Munich on August 8.

Chelsea trail 3-0 from the first leg played at Stamford Bridge before the football shutdown.
