Wigan Athletic prospect Jensen Weir is expected to complete a £500,000 move to Premier League Brighton and Hove Albion this weekend. 

The sale will allow Wigan to pay their players’ wages for the rest of the season.

The talented 18-year old midfielder was the subject of an offer from Tottenham but he has opted to join Brighton where his father David Weir, the former Everton defender, is in the coaching staff.

There will be further add ons placed in the deal for Weir who became Wigan’s youngest debutant in 2017 when he figured in an EFL Trophy tie aged 15 years and 280 days.

Coach company Eavesway are providing free travel for Wigan’s team to make their fixture at Barnsley on Saturday.

The club’s administrators said players would have to be sold to cover costs. 

They also have interest from clubs in Antonee Robinson, Joe Gelhardt and Alfie Devine.
