Eric Dier hits back at critics who claim Jose Mourinho has lost the Tottenham dressing room

Eric Dier has fired back at the critics who claim Jose Mourinho has lost the Tottenham dressing room.

Spurs lost 3-1 to Sheffield United on Thursday and Mourinho revealed he held a dressing room inquest afterwards as his side sit 10th in the Premier League table.

But Dier insists that all the Tottenham players are behind their manager, who replaced Mauricio Pochettino as head coach in November.

‘That’s just the world we live in nowadays. I think it’s kind of crazy. We’ve been together a very short period of time. We’ve gone through circumstances which no one could foresee,’ Dier told beIN Sports. 

‘The change of manager half way through the season, followed by many, many injuries and then the coronavirus pandemic. 

‘There have been many obstacles to overcome and we hope that those things will bring us closer together.

‘Those kind of comments are just ridiculous really.’

Dier, who has been playing at centre back alongside Davinson Sanchez in recent weeks, insists Mourinho has a big influence on players off the pitch.

‘He’s a huge character, one of the most successful managers ever. It’s a great pleasure to be playing under him,’ Dier said.

‘When I look back I’ll remember how lucky I was to play to play first under Pochettino and then Mourinho. 

‘It’s a very privileged position to work under those two managers. Mourinho is someone, for me personally, who knows how to light the fire inside you. 

‘I want to win for him. I want to do everything to succeed to try and win with him and he builds that within you.

‘He’s extremely motivated, extremely passionate about the game, about winning. 

‘His energy is very high everyday around the training ground, on the training pitch he’s always pushing. I’m really enjoying working under him.

‘He knows how to get a reaction out of people in different ways. He’s very strong in that sense. He knows how to touch each person in the right way to get the best out of them.’ 

Sheffield United secured their first win since the restart by defeating Tottenham 3-1 last week

Mourinho has criticised his players publicly in the past which has backfired at his previous clubs.

He heavily questioned Luke Shaw and Paul Pogba at Manchester United with some suggesting that he lost the dressing room at Old Trafford.

Mourinho has continued that trend with £62million-man Tanguy Ndombele at Spurs insisting that he wasn’t doing enough in training to warrant a starting place.

This handling of the situation has resulted in criticism for the Portuguese coach and will be hoping his side can bounce back against Everton on Monday night. 

A win would put them above Sheffield United into eighth place – nine points off fourth-placed Chelsea.
