Today, the whole world celebrates Public Service Day as decreed by the United Nations. This special
commemoration allows everyone to reflect on the true value and virtue of public service. It is admirable to note
how Public Officers are upholding the ethos of the Public Service in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Public Service has been the backbone of social and economic progress in the country for decades. It
has helped build our country, including our diversified economy, our educated population, and our diverse and
multi-cultural society.
The theme chosen for this year by the United Nations for this year is – ‘Action Today, Impact Tomorrow:
Innovating and Transforming Public Services and Institutions to Realize the Sustainable Development Goals’.
It emphasizes the crucial need for innovation by our public organisations to transform themselves and the services
they provide.
The dedication of Public officers towards ensuring the progress of the country has proved itself as a major
asset. We need to now use this capacity to embark on a meaningful modernisation of our services that will bring
the required resilience to face future challenges. The Public Service continues to play a pivotal developmental role
in the growth of the country, taking steps to keep pace with globalisation and society’s changing needs and
demands through innovation in both services and programmes. We need to do more and better understand
opportunities and problems, generate more useful ideas in a transparent and open manner. There is a need to
dramatically harness technology with a relentless focus on the needs of our citizens.
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought in emerging and evolving difficulties that has put to test all our
public services while bringing the country into a difficult social and economic phase. This will be a major test for
all public organisations as to how they will reinvent themselves to deliver the required service in order to set the
pace for economic recovery and gear up into another phase of our socio-economic development.
There is no doubt that we all need to stay ahead of the curve if we want the country to grow and prosper. I,
therefore, call upon all Public Officers to maintain the good work and continue to provide selfless dedication to the
population.

I invite all public officers, irrespective of their grades, to join hands with me to celebrate our achievements
and continue on the path of the transformation of our public service for the prosperity of our citizens.

Hon. T.Hurdoyal [ Vikram]
Minister of Public Service, Administrative and Institutional Reforms
