  • He is due to return to Old Trafford this summer but doesn’t want to play back up

Dean Henderson will hold off signing a new contract at Manchester United unless he is guaranteed to be the club’s No 1 goalkeeper next season, according to reports.

The 23-year-old has been outstanding while on loan at Sheffield United and helped the Blades mount an unlikely challenge for European football during their first season back in the Premier League

His loan at Bramall Lane is due to expire this summer, with the clubs reportedly close to agreeing an extension so he can play for Chris Wilder until the season concludes, but talk has already turned to how he will feature for Ole Gunner Solskjaer in future.

David De Gea is United’s current first-choice goalkeeper but a series of errors this season, including in last week’s draw at Tottenham, have given Henderson hope he could usurp him this summer.

And according to Manchester Evening News, Henderson is only willing to put pen to paper on a new contract ‘if he is promised the No 1 spot’.

It is claimed Henderson has already received several offers to leave Old Trafford again this summer but he does not expect to leave the club permanently.

However, Henderson is not willing to sit on the bench and play second fiddle to the Spaniard and does not want to be in the position of being sent out on loan every summer until De Gea leaves.

Solskjaer has admitted Henderson will become the club’s main goalkeeper one day but United only agreed a new four-year deal with De Gea back in September.

Chelsea and Tottenham have both shown an interest in securing Henderson’s services. He has a contract with United until 2022 with the club having the option of extending it by a further 12 months.

Under the terms of his loan, Henderson is ineligible to play against his parent club when the Blades travel to Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

Blades boss Wilder revealed on Monday he is confident the club can extend Henderson’s loan deal until the delayed Premier League season concludes.

‘I believe it’s now just administration with the two clubs,’ said Wilder. ‘I had a chat with Ole and he was fine with extending his loan until the end of the season.

‘Hopefully, that will get signed off before the deadline.’

Wilder continued: ‘I appreciate Ole’s help on that one. Dean has been great for us and we have been great for Dean.’
