Tyrone Mings reveals an error from Aston Villa’s kitman was the reason behind him being the only player not to wear an NHS badge in the Premier League’s restart… before it was added to his shirt at half-time

  • Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings did not have the NHS logo on his shirt in the first half
  • But he emerged from the dressing room with a shirt that did have the badge on it
  • Fans quickly took aim at the English defender for the absence of the NHS logo
  • Mings took to social media to confirm its absence was due to a kitman’s error

Tyrone Mings has insisted the absence of the NHS logo from his Aston Villa shirt for the first half of Wednesday night’s draw with Sheffield United was just a simple mistake.

A number of spectators pointed out on social media that Mings’ shirt was missing the NHS logo – worn by all Premier League players at present to pay thanks to their work during the coronavirus crisis.

It was quickly fixed at half time though as Mings returned to the pitch from the dressing room with the NHS logo stitched into the shirt.

The Villa defender, commenting on Instagram after the game, admitted it was a simple error from the kitman.

Mings wrote: ‘Been bought to my attention that the kitman didn’t put the NHS badge on my shirt first half’.

A number of spectators were quick to point out the absence of the NHS logo on Mings’ shirt before he rectified the mistake.

@wormymufc19 asked: ‘Why has Tyrone Mings not got the thank you NHS logo on his shirt??!’.

@_SophiaHay added: ‘So Tyrone Mings don’t wanna wear the NHS badge? Rude. Not like they risking their lives saving lives everyday or anything’.

Mings and his Villa team-mates were lucky to take a point from the game after Sheffield United were denied victory by a technical fault.

The Blades were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw after goal-line technology failed on Wednesday, in the top flight’s first game for three months after the coronavirus pandemic halted sport.

Goalkeeper Orjan Nyland carried Oliver Norwood’s free kick across the line but a goal was not awarded.

Referee Michael Oliver’s watch did not signal a goal and play continued with the video assistant referee failing to intervene.

Victory would have taken Sheffield United into the top five and the Blades will have to wait to see how much the error will cost them in the race for Europe.

Hawk-eye Innovations, who run the technology, ‘unreservedly’ apologised to the Premier League and Sheffield United after the game had concluded.

Villa, desperately needing points after one win from their last seven games, host Chelsea on Sunday.
