Republic of Mauritius- Three persons have died in Police custody since November 2019, indicates PM

GIS–  09 June, 2020: Since November 2019 to date, three persons have died in Police custody, stated the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, today, in the National Assembly, in reply to a Parliamentary Question pertaining to the number of deaths in police custody as well as the cause of death.


Details of the cases are as follows:

 

·         On 10 March 2020, Mr M.D.M, aged 25, died at Vacoas Detention Centre, the cause of death being Asphyxia due to hanging;

·         On 20 March 2020, Mr A.B, a Malagasy National, aged 48 years died at Jeetoo Hospital of Subarachnoid Haemorrhage due to drug concealment in his body, and

·          On 13 May 2020, Mr J.D.M.U, aged 29 years, passed away in a cell at Trou D’eau Douce Police Station and the cause of death was Asphyxia due to hanging.

 

The Prime Minister added that police enquiry is ongoing in the three cases.
